AMD Socket AM2 / AM2+ CPU Lineup

The AMD Socket AM2 and AM2+ series (2006–2008) marked an important evolution in AMD’s desktop platform, introducing widespread support for DDR2 memory and advancing the multi-core era.

Socket AM2 debuted with refined Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 X2 dual-core processors, along with budget Sempron and server-oriented Opteron models. It delivered improved memory performance over the previous Socket 939 while maintaining compatibility with the K8 architecture.

Socket AM2+, launched as a minor upgrade in 2007, added HyperTransport 3.0, split power planes for better efficiency, and enhanced power management. It supported the first-generation Phenom quad-core processors (K10 architecture), higher-clocked Athlon 64 X2 variants, and offered backward compatibility with AM2 CPUs (and limited AM3 support on many boards with BIOS updates).
